Flu Vaccine Makers on Watch as U.S. Reaches Epidemic Level (GSK) (NVS) (SNY)

January 18, 2013 10:44 AM EST
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today that influenza-related deaths in the U.S. are at epidemic levels. Epidemic would be when incidence is above "expected" levels, while pandemic is an epidemic of an infectious disease that spreads through human populations across a large region, like a continent.

The U.S. is not at the pandemic level.

On watch are flu vaccine makers. The one's listed by the CDC include:
  • GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) - Fluarix;

  • Sanofi Pasteur (NYSE: SNY) - Fluzone; and

  • Novartis (NYSE: NVS) - Fluvirin, Agriflu.

Given the size of thses companies, its unlikely that a heavy flu season will move the needle too much. But, traders will still be keeping an eye as more developments surface.

All three are lower on Friday's session.
