Separate but Equal: RIM (RIMM) Looks to Keep Personal, Business Worlds Apart with BB10
Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) may not sell the most hardware to enterprises in the first few months of BlackBerry 10's release, but it might aim to do so over the long haul.
The Waterloo, Ontario-based mobile giant is working with VMware (NYSE: VMW) and Red Bend Software on a new version of its BlackBerry Balance platform, which would allow employees to use smartphones and tablets for work, while protecting their privacy in the process.
PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates that about 28 percent of workers use personal devices for work, a $67.2 billion market in 2011.
Employees might feel better about using their personal devices for work tasks if they know non-work-related content is staying that way, while businesses would save money by not having to pay up for a separate device for each employee.
Both VMware and Red Bend are developing separate platforms as well, Bloomberg notes this morning.
Shares of RIM are up in early trading Thursday.
