Shutterfly's (SFLY) New Acquisition Wants You to Transfer from Instagram (FB)

Shutterfly, Inc. (Nasdaq: SFLY) is firing some shots across Facebook's (Nasdaq: FB) bow today.

Earlier, Shutterfly announced that it acquired cloud-based photo organization and sharing firm ThisLife. The purchase price wasn't announced, but TechCrunch suggested that ThisLife might have been gotten for around $25 million.

One of the key points from the release is ThisLife's ability to transfer photos from other outlet's, including Facebook's Instagram. Though the company is small, TC went on about how its a nifty platform, with an algorithm to put high-quality photos first and a facial-recognition feature. Shutterfly might have specifically been making the acquisition for the algo and worker talent.

The move builds on Shutterfly's ever-growing stable of acquisitions. Last September, the Company acquired Penguin Digital, a company that allows users to create and purchase personalized photo products, and also a software tool that allows developers to sell photo and other related merchandise directly from within their apps.

Shares of Shutterfly are now in positive territory after starting lower Monday morning. Facebook is up over two percent on the session.
