Reports today say Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL) made an investment in Taiwan SSD maker Memoright. The deal creates a strategic alliance, giving Marvell traction in SSD.

Commenting on developments, analysts at Nomura said "Marvell's traction in SSD is important because this technology is being embraced as a viable alternative to hard drives in notebooks and servers."

Marvell's partnership with Memoright underscores the company's lack of a complete SSD solution, said analysts.

"Traction thus far has been weak. We believe LSI Corporation (Nasdaq: LSI) currently has 50+ SSD design wins as compared to 20+ for Marvell. In addition, Marvell lost a design win in Intel's mid-range 520 series SSD offering to LSI."

Nomura Securities Neutral rating on Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL) with a price target of $8.00.
