Netflix (NFLX) is About to Get More Social, With Help from Facebook (FB)

December 26, 2012 2:49 PM EST
Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) may be looking to get you to be a little more social and do so in the most direct way possible.

According to TPM, Netflix will be introducing social features for U.S. subs in 2013 following a bill passed by Congress just before the holiday recess that prevented companies from sharing video rental history. This may mean that Netflix will require subs to login through Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) accounts so they'll be easily able to share watched movies with friends via the Netflix Facebook app.

The mandate won't be new for Netflix; users in Canada and LatAm have been able to login via Facebook since 2011. Netflix has maintained that it wanted to do the same in the U.S.

The law congress passed amends the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) of 1988, allowing companies like Netflix to share video preferences through social media, TPM notes.

Shares of Netflix are up over 1 percent on the session.
