RIM (RIMM) Finally Gets Popular Messaging App in Key Growth Market
Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) is getting a little boost in one of its key markets, as a Chinese Internet titan released a new app for RIMs BlackBerry operating system.
Some might call it too little to late. If you're a RIM shareholder, any time's the right time. 36kr.com reported recently that Tencent has finally released its WeChat app for BlackBerry OS versions 5.6 and 7. Though the app looks similar, it was noted that some advanced features were absent when compared with the same app on Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android and Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS.
Tencent boasts having roughly 300 million users on WeChat. The app surpassed the 200 million milestone last September.
Investors might cry out that WeChat might infringe on BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) territory. But, given that app selection is one of the most prominent things users take into consideration when selecting their next smartphone, a more robust portfolio should do nothing but boost RIMs popularity.
Let's just hope that development of WeChat for BB10 is underway.
Earlier, it was noted that Southeast Asia, Africa and LatAm were still markets where RIM was popular. Shares are down 1.7 percent on the session, gearing up for a two-session losing streak.
