Consumers might see a DISH Networks (Nasdaq: DISH)-branded smartphone sooner than later.
News out late Tuesday has the Federal Communications Commission approving a measure by DISH which would allow it to utilize is spectrum to run a smartphone service. The FCC voted 5 to 0 in favor of the proposal.
The proposal calls for limitations on power DISH would be able to run the network on, citing preservation of government-owned frequencies known as the H Block. Sprint (NYSE: S), which was rumored to be in tie-ups with DISH over a possible joint venture into wireless, might also place a bid to acquire the H Block.
A spokesperson for DISH said the company would evaluate strategic options with respect to making the spectrum of use to customers.
DISH first sought approval in August 2011 after the $3 billion acquisition of spectrum from DBSD. Earlier in 2012, the FCC denied a proposal by LightSquared to use satellite airwaves, leading the Phil Falcone-backed company to go bankrupt.
Shares of DISH are up 2.6 percent on the session.
