Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is firmly in positive territory Wednesday amid detail leaking out on another upcoming game console.
TheVerge is reporting today that Microsoft will reveal a set-to box console, which will serve as a low-cost alternative to the current Xbox console. The device will run on core components of Windows 8, will provide streaming content and casual gaming.
The STB will also have a chipset which allows for quick start-up loading and near-instant access to TV and entertainment services.
Microsoft will be trying out a dual-SKU system for its next Xbox, which is expected to be unveiled before holiday 2013. Reports following news earlier in November that Microsoft might also release some sort of Xbox tablet device, which would be smaller than the surface and more game oriented.
Whether Microsoft will be successful in an STB venture is the big question; Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), and others have tried for a more compact form-factor in the past, though sales of those devices have been anything but headline numbers. The most successful is arguably Apple TV which, for under $100, gets you access to tons of apps and Apple's iTunes.
Shares of Microsoft are up over 1 percent.
