Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) might be playing it safe when it comes to its next mobile device.
According to reports from Chinese publication Commercial Times, Apple is already performing 'test runs' on production for the aptly named iPhone 5S. Just two-months following the release of the iPhone 5, the company has come under some scrutiny as sales missed marks mainly due to production issues at suppliers.
Preliminary runs will have production of 50,000 to 100,000 units.
Of course, the report out of Commercial Times might be taken with a grain of salt. The publication sees production on the iPhone 5S ramping in the first-quarter for a mid-year release date. Additionally, the article speculates that a new iPad and highly-rumored TV set will also launch in the first-half of 2013.
Still, shares of Apple are moving off of session lows. Starting production early might be a smart move given the ongoing trouble related to touch panel production, though its unlikely that Apple would saturate the market with another iPhone before the third-quarter of next year. Shares are down about 1.3 percent.
