It has been expected that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) wouldn't be able to retain an 80 percent share of the global tablet market and new data out of IDC reinforces that belief.

According to the firm, Apple's third-quarter global tablet share slipped from 59.7 percent down to 50.4 percent. The number is also down from 65.5 percent in the second quarter this year.

Peer Samsung gained about 12 points, moving to 18.4 percent. Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) rose to 9 percent from no market share last year. Samsung saw benefit from its Galaxy Tab and Note 10.1 products, while Amazon grew on the back of its Kindle Fire and Kindle HD tablets.

Earlier Monday, Apple gave investors a reason to breathe easier after reporting sales of 3 million iPad units over the weekend. This was the first weekend that the smaller iPad Mini and iPad 4 were available for purchase. Though specific numbers weren't available for each device, analysts previously said sales of the iPad Mini could range anywhere between 1 million and 3 million units. No doubt, there will be more on the iPad Mini as analysts report on findings later today and tomorrow.

Shares of Apple are up in early trading amid the positive tablet news.
