Is Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) girding up for a big holiday shopping season? Or, a big holiday selling season?
According to AllThingsD late Thursday, Facebook is inviting the media to FAO Schwarz (founder: Frederick August Otto Schwarz. No 't' in 'Schwarz,' by the way) in Manhattan on November 1st. The event will be to demonstrate "what's new with Facebook Gifts."
Having only been out for less than a month, our guess is: everything.
Facebook started the segment as a way to drive new revenue streams. The effort might put a little pressure on the likes of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), Best Buy (NYSE: BBY), Walmart (NYSE: WMT), and, well, FAO Schwarz. With over one billion users registered for the site, any traction Facebook can gain in retail would be an obvious positive, especially given that it's not exactly clipping overhead on warehousing goods.
Shares are indicated higher Friday morning.
