VIVUS (Nasdaq: VVUS), Arena (Nasdaq: ARNA), and Orexigen (Nasdaq: OREX) are under watch as the FDA is said to be evaluating a process to bring obesity drugs to market faster.
Reports today have FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg telling scientific advisers that it is considering allowing for smaller clinical trials on new weight-loss pills, antibiotics, and other drugs deemed to be socially beneficial.
Additionally, Hamburg said that doctors might be able to prescribe the drugs faster to patients in dire need under a "special medical use" label.
VIVUS recently launched its Qsymia pill, while Arena/Esai developed BELVIQ, and Orexigen/Takeda are still conducting trials for Contrave.
