Apple (AAPL) May Miss Millions of iPhone Sales in China as Gov't Poo-Poos Subsidies

Will Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) miss out on one of the biggest carrier deals of its existence?

Maybe. According to reports out Thursday, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL) -- which is controlled by the Chinese government -- is opposed to the idea of subsidies for Apple's new iPhone 5. Deutsche Bank said that the government is not supportive due to the large subsidies for the device.

The firm also noted that a deal between the two isn't likely anytime soon.

Of course, many of Apple's smartphones have been largely unsubsidized in China in the past. The new iPhone carries the proper equipment to run on China Mobile's network, meaning Apple could sell the device in its stores for full price. Though sales wouldn't be as robust as a partially subsidized device, it would give Apple a head start until a deal could be struck with the carrier.

Shares of Apple are indicated higher Thursday morning.
