Shares of Shire plc (Nasdaq: SHPG) caught a buzz Friday, gaining 1.5 percent in heavy volume. A report by analysts at Cowen said a “viable,” additional competitive generic version of Shire’s Adderall XR might not enter the market this year.

Previously, Shire settled with Impax (Nasdaq: IPXL), Teva (NYSE: TEVA), Watson (NYSE: WPI), Actavis and Sandoz allowing them to launch generic versions of Adderall XR. However, the companies first need FDA approval.

Watson’s proposed generic version of Adderall failed to meet FDA’s new bioequivalence standards in July, noted the report by Cowen, so to date only Actavis has secured approval, which may allow Shire a few more days of sunshine before the cloudy skies roll in.
