After the close, BMO Capital initiated coverage on Teradata (NYSE: TDC) with a Market Perform. PT $86.00.
"We believe TDC remains well positioned in the business analytics market segment, and we do not think that competitors, including Hadoop-based systems, will place incremental pressure on TDC," analyst Keith Bachman states. However, to be bullish at current levels the company needs to grow 2013 revenues by 16%, versus the expected 13.6% growth in 2013 and 14% in the September 2012 Q. "To say it a different way, we think Teradata needs to beat in each of the next two quarters by $10+ million on the top line, to push the stock higher, and we do not see this as likely."
Bachman does not believe Teradata will be acquired. Instead, he sees the company will use M&A to 1) sustain growth rates, and 2) diversify and acquire applications to leverage its core data warehouse product portfolio.
