Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) may be continuing to struggle against ARM (Nasdaq: ARMH) in the mobile handset market.

Digitimes reports that Intel's Medfield has seen some strong adoption from ZTEm Lenovo, Motorola Mobility, and others, but ARM processors, including those mid- and high-end chips developed by Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) and NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA).

ZTE and Lenovo are the only two adopting Medfield to report strong smartphone sales, though the duo put the chips in just a few models. Sources also said to Digitimes that shipments have been in relatively small volumes.

All is not lost, however, with Intel planning to release its Atom Z2000 soon. The chip will be used for devices in emerging markets like Russia, China, and India, with launch expected in early 2013. The lower-cost chips have capacity to support 2G/G dual-SIM, 3G/HSPA+, and Android mobile games.

Ahead of the opening bell, Intel is down about 0.2 percent.
