Stocks Crossing 50-Day SMA 09/11: (UNG) (RIMM) (SSN) Above; (KFT) (LRN) (HOTT) Below
The following is a list of stocks crossing the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) and are either above or below the metric. The 50-day is considered an indicator of a potential near-term trend formation.

- United States Natural Gas ETF (NYSE: UNG) - up 5.8 percent. The nat gas ETF getting to a one-month high today following a spike in prices to about $2.95 per mmBtu earlier. For more color on the move higher, click here.
- Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) - up 4.6 percent. Getting above the 50-day SMA at a comfortable point for the first time since late April, RIM is higher ahead of Apple's big iPhone event tomorrow. Of note, RIM is down over 75 percent from the same point last year.
The move is notable, but keep in mind that the 50-day is at $7.21, while the 20-day -- a touchier measure -- is still below that mark, with latest readings coming in at $7.09.
- Samson Oil & Gas Limited (AMEX: SSN) - up 17.6 percent. Like RIM, the stock has been hit over the past few months. Today, Samson looks to be making a strong move above the $1.10 level. Short interest at 857,000 shares isn't high either, writing off a short squeeze here.
- US Steel (NYSE: X) - up 4.0 percent. Standpoint Research started US Steel with a Buy rating and robust $34 target earlier, a 64 percent premium to US Steel's closing price of $20.70 on Monday.
- Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE: KFT) - down 1.2 percent. Shares flattening today following a growth outlook update issued late last week, which caused a tumble in Kraft stock.
- K12, Inc. (NYSE: LRN) - down 13.6 percent. Dropping following a negative report on the company earlier.
- Hot Topic Inc. (Nasdaq: HOTT) - down 9.2 percent. Hot Topic making a notable dip today, even hitting the 200-day SMA at $8.99 earlier. No specific news is out on Hot Topic today, indicating more of a technical move.
