Against the Grain: Burberry's Fall = Success for Other Retailers (M) (GPS) (JCP)

September 11, 2012 12:05 PM EDT
The bad news: Burberry reported grim preliminary Q2 sales.

The good news: the fall of luxury may mean more trickle-down shoppers heading into cheaper retailers.

Getting the hint today are JCPenney (NYSE: JCP), TJX Cos (NYSE: TJX), and Bon-Ton Stores (Nasdaq: BONT). Others will need to catch up.

Though that might mean middle- and lower-class consumers may spend less, many will still need to do some shopping. Or else, we'd all end up like thrice-removed Uncle Sid, who hasn't purchased a new shirt or trousers in 20 years. ("That's 21 years!" - Uncle Sid.)

So, while Burberry, LMVH, Hermes, and others might see a little slowdown, there's always a shopping option open for most. Traders might keep an eye on Macy's (NYSE: M), Gap, Inc. (NYSE: GPS), and, maybe, Dillard's (NYSE: DDS).
