Google (GOOG) Rushes New Feature into Nexus 7 Tablet Ahead of Holiday Shopping Season

Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) currently Nexus 7 tablet is great in many respect, save for one key item: no 3G connectivity. But, that might not be the case for long.

According to reports out over the weekend, Google might bring a 3G-equipped version of its new media tablet to market sometime in October. No other changes are expected for the device.

Google's partner for the Nexus 7 tablet is Taiwanese OEM ASUStek. Production at ASUStek's facilities is expected to ramp-up, with release of the new device expected within six weeks.

News comes as Google is looking to challenge peers like Amazon.com (Nasdaq AMZN) and Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) in the media tablet marketplace. Currently, Amazon.com's Kindle Fire is Wi-Fi only, though the e-commerce giant is holding an event on September 6th which should include the release of a new Kindle Fire model.
