This morning, PayPal/eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) announced a new relationship with Discover (NYSE: DFS) that will significantly expand PayPal's offline reach beginning next year, notes a report today from Baird Equity Research. Starting in 2013, Discover will work with PayPal to enable participating merchants to accept PayPal easily through their existing relationship with Discover.

Analysts Colin Sebastian said PayPal’s ability to leverage Discover’s network of retail locations should provide meaningful scale in the “brick and mortar” channel. More importantly, he said he believes this initiative further distances PayPal’s digital wallet ahead of other mobile payment platforms, such as Google Wallet (Nasdaq: GOOG), Isis, and Square.

Baird has an Outperform rating and $47 price target on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY).
