Google's (GOOG) New Tablet Draws Reaction from Barnes & Noble (BKS)

June 28, 2012 8:44 AM EDT
Just a little more of Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) aiming to play catch-up with rivals.

According to a release earlier in the session, Barnes & Noble is offering purchasers of its NOOK tablet a $30 gift card with purchase, starting today and ending on July 8th. The deal is for a 16-gigabyte NOOK with Wi-Fi, which retails for $249.

Coincidentally, the move comes following Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) introduction of its Nexus 7 tablet yesterday. According to Google's website for the device, purchasers will get a $25 credit to Google's Play store...basically an aggregation of streaming movies, music, and media. That offer is good for both the 8- and 16-GB Nexus models and also for a limited time.

Shares of Barnes & Noble are reflecting the excitement of this "amazing" offer well: lifeless in early trading.
