The Major Underlying Problem with Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 8 Platform...

Someone finally found the Achilles heel of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) upcoming Windows 8 platform -- and it ain't pretty.

Looking to capitalize on the burgeoning apps marketplace, Windows 8 is more optimized for handheld devices like a tablet or smartphone. Those devices have smaller screens than the typical PC, bringing out the best in what Microsoft's next OS has to offer.

However, Engadget recently snapped photos of a new Samsung Series 7 All-In-One PC running Windows 8. Notice how there's a lot going on with that display? We counted about 91 separate "app boxes" on the display screen. There are bigger ones and also several divisions of the larger boxes into two separate boxes.

Basically, there's a whole lotta boxing going on here.

For those who don't want to be inundated by the Space Invaders of desktop operating systems, Windows 8 will likely have an option to revert to the same format as Windows 7. (Note to Microsoft: having the desktop try to ambush a users mouse while keeping formation would immediately jettison Windows 8 to the top of the global "Best OS Ever" list. Like, make them zombie app icons which are tireless, relentless, and very pointer-hungry.)
