Barclays on Healthcare: Top Takeaways from our Second Annual Therapeutics
Symposium
Alzheimer's Disease - Disease modifying agents that produce modest disease progression delay could still be approved and widely used. Nevertheless, the physicians were "fairly pessimistic" towards the late-stage assets in development (i.e. Eli Lilly's (NYSE: LLY) solanezumab or J&J (NYSE: JNJ)/Pfizer (NYSE: PFE/Elan's (NYSE: ELN) bapineuzumab).
Osteoporosis - Amgen (Nasdaq: AMGN)/UCB's anti-sclerostin antibody (CDP7851/AMG785) has the potential to become a differentiated product due to its durable effect on bone density; physicians were more cautious towards MRK's odanacatib.
Multiple Sclerosis - Biogen Idec's (Nasdaq: BIIB) BG-12 has a high potential for becoming the dominant first-line agent. Novartis' oral agent Gilenya may see significant pressure from the launch of BG-12, which is seen as having a cleaner safety profile. BIIB's Tysabri may continue to see increased uptake as it targets a different set of patients as compared to BG-12, while Teva's (Nasdaq: TEVA) Copaxone and BIIB's Avonex are expected to see notable erosion.
HCV - The initial bolus of patients for Vertex's (Nasdaq: VRTX) Invicek and Merck's (NYSE: MRK) Victrelis have been mostly depleted. Physicians will likely mix and match oral agents when they become approved (i.e. Gilead's (Nasdaq: GILD) GS-7977 and Bristol-Myers (NYSE: BMY) daclatasvir) if key players choose not to collaborate."
