Goldfield (GV) Rips On Surprise Q1 Results

Goldfield Corp. (AMEX: GV) shares are up sharply after the company reported a surge in profit and revenues for the first quarter.

The Melbourne, Florida-based electrical construction and real estate development provider reported Q1 net income of $2.7 million, or $0.10 per share, versus a loss of $11,000, or ($0.00) net loss per share, last year. Revenue for the quarter came in at $17.7 million, versus $8.9 million reported last year.

And things only look better for the company...

"The prospects for our electrical construction business are brighter today than at any time in recent history," said CEO John H. Sottile. "Our backlog at March 31, 2012 was $70.6 million, up from $6.2 million at March 31st last year." Mr. Sottile also added, "We believe that our recent expansion into Texas and our new CREZ project will provide a good opportunity for further growth in this region."

Shares of Goldfield Corp. opened up 35 percent and now sit up 40 percent.
