Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) shares are trending surprisingly lower Wednesday amid reports the company plans to compete more wholly with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and others in the smartphone realm.

According to Sina.com (Nasdaq: SINA), Baidu plans to release a $160 smartphone "very soon."

The device, expected to be produced by Foxconn, will feature a 3.5-inch screen, 1400mAH battery, and high-res camera. The device will also run Baidu's Yi operating system.

Baidu's next device will be for wider audiences compared with its Streak Pro D43, released last December. That device, made by Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), sells for $474 and is targeted more for business users.

Shares of Baidu are about 2.5 percent lower on the session.
