Market Wrap: An Earnings Freight Train, A Buffett-Sized Scare, Apple Revived

April 17, 2012 5:51 PM EDT
Market wrap-up for April 17th

End of the Day: Dow Jones up 194.13 to 13,115.54; Nasdaq up 54.42 to 3,042.82; S&P 500 up 21.21 to 1,390.78.

The following is a brief summary of events moving markets today:
  • Earnings, Earnings and more Earnings: As earnings season ramps-up, some heavyweights reported first-quarter results Tuesday. Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) surprised to the upside and its stock jumped 2%. Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) fell about 1% despite results that handily beat the Street. After hours Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and IBM (NYSE: IBM) each reported better-than-expected results, but with shares up big recently both stocks sold off.

  • That was scary: The Oracle of Omaha gave investors a scare after hours Tuesday after announcing to the world that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. But don't fret... it is stage 1 and his prospects look good. "I've been told by my doctors that my condition is not remotely life-threatening or even debilitating in any meaningful way," he said. Thank goodness.

  • You can't keep a good stock down: After selling-off 10% over the past 5 sessions, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) shares roared back in a big way Tuesday. Shares closed up nearly $30 and erased a large chuck of the losses over the 5-day span.

  • We give up: First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) announced a major restructuring early Tuesday that includes plant closings and 2,000 layoffs, saying the solar market has changed and the company needs to change along with it. Investors loved the initiative, sending the stock up 10 percent.
