Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) shares are moving higher Monday afternoon following reports the company filed for two U.S. patents with respect to advertisements on digital book readers (e-Books).
According to the BBC, Yahoo! said ads on e-Books have been "less than optimal" to date. The two new filings would allow advertisers to better target users with items like keywords, the type of book being read, or even the context of just one chapter.
The patent filing continues: "Greater levels of advertising, which may be more valuable to an advertiser and potentially more distracting to an e-book reader, may warrant higher discounts."
Depending on consumer reaction, ads might even make e-Books free.
Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) e-Readers currently show advertisements on menus and when the device is turned on an off. Nothing has been placed in the pages of the e-Book to date.
The patents also alluded to different cost-classes: toothpaste and other toiletries might garner a lower cost compared with ads for pizza and soft drinks.
Shares of Yahoo! are up 0.7 percent on the session.
