Semi Stocks Higher as Gartner Boosts Sales Outlook for 2012

Chip makers are looking strong Tuesday following a boosted 2012 outlook by a noted research firm. The Semi HOLDRs ETF (NYSE: SMH) is up more than 1 percent at last check.

Issued in the fourth quarter of 2011 when times were a little tougher, Gartner (NYSE: IT) last saw semiconductor spending up 2.2 percent in 2012. The firm has now revised its outlook for a 4 percent gain to $316 billion this year.

DRAM pricing should improve in the second quarter of 2012, Gartner noted. DRAM revs will show a 0.9 percent increase in revs for 2012.

NAND memory is expected to pop 18 percent in 2012 as more and more mobile devices and solid-state drives are utilized.

Media tablet production should see a 78 percent increase with revs hitting $9.5 billion. PC production should rise 4.7 percent with revs of $57.8 billion. Notably, mobile phone production should move 6.7 percent higher with overall revs rising $57.2 billion.

Shares of Texas Instruments (Nasdaq: TXN) are 0.5 percent better, Taiwan Semi (NYSE: TSM) shares are up 2 percent, shares of QUALCOMM (Nasdaq: QCOM) are 0.8 percent higher, AMD (NYSE: AMD) shares are up 1.5 percent, and Micron (Nasdaq: MU) shares are over 5 percent in positive territory.
