SINA's (SINA) Q4 EPS Falls Inline on Light Revs; Looks to Invest More in Weibo.com

SINA (Nasdaq: SINA) shares are getting hit post-market Monday following its fourth-quarter earnings release.

Revenue in the period rose 26 percent from $82.45 million in the same period last year to $128.7 million. The Street was expecting sales of $129.34 million.

SINA swung to profit of $9.28 million, or 14 cents per share, from a loss of $99.99 million last year. Adjusting for one-time items, earnings were a more robust 21 cents per share. Analysts were looking for EPS of 21 cents.

Non-GAAP gross margin slimmed from 61 percent during the year-ago quarter to 57 percent.

Brand advertising revs moved 26 percent higher to $103.7 million.

SINA's online brand advertising grew 27 percent to a historical high in 2011," commented CEO Charles Chao. "The strong results of SINA's brand advertising business have enabled SINA to make significant investments in Weibo.com. During the fourth quarter, the popularity of Weibo.com continued to grow, especially in the mobile and tablet space, where usage now exceeds those via personal computers."

Looking to the first quarter 2012, SINA sees revs of $101 million to $104 million, versus expectations of $113.7 million.

SINA shares are now down about 5 percent to $59.80. The stock closed at $62.95.
