Housing starts for the month of November rose 9.3% to 685,000. The Street was expecting a rise of 1.1% to 635,000 units. The reading for October was revised from 628,000 to 627,000.
Building permits for the month rose 5.7% to 681,000. Economists were looking for a decline of 1.4% to 635,000. October's reading was revised lower from 653,000 to 644,000.
