Cantor Fitzgerald initiates coverage on Acacia Research (NASDAQ: ACTG) with a Buy. PT $45.00.
Cantor analyst says, "Until recently, patents have been a defensive asset class, used principally as an impassive insurance policy for its holder's core business, with rights-assertion (costly and risky litigation) being an unsavory last resort. However, Acacia has since demonstrated that patents can be monetized with increasing ease, little risk, and no capital intensity. Thus, a virtuous cycle has evolved, where IP holders (small and increasingly large) partner with ACTG to unlock IP value, while larger companies increasingly settle and/or preemptively license Acacia's burgeoning patent portfolio. Along these lines, ACTG's 192 IP portfolios and 1,050 agreements, have generated $500M+ in licensing revenues, while Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), and Samsung have already signed comprehensive IP litigation-protection agreements (span a few years)."
