Microsoft (MSFT) Posts Ho-Hum Q1 Profit as Revenue Rises 7%

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) reported first-quarter results after the close Thursday which were solid but fell short of the lofty hopes from investors.

The software-giant reported record first-quarter revenue of $17.37 billion, up 7 percent from last year and slightly above the Wall Street consensus of $17.25 billion.

Earnings per share were reported at $0.68, up 10 percent from last year and right in-line with the Wall Street consensus.

Microsoft Business Division reported $5.62 billion in first quarter revenue, up 8 percent. The Server & Tools segment showed revenue growth of 10 percent to $4.25 billion. Windows and Windows Live Division saw a revenue bump of 2 percent to $4.87 billion.

Microsoft's search engine Bing saw organic US market share grow 350 basis points year over year to 14.7 percent. Total U.S. search market share, including Yahoo! properties, was approximately 27 percent.

"We had another strong quarter for Office, SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync, and saw growing demand for our public and private cloud services including Office 365, Dynamics CRM Online, and Windows Azure," said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft. "With a great set of consumer products like Windows 7 PCs, Windows Phone 7.5, Xbox and Kinect, we are excited about the holiday buying season."

Including Skype, Micsosoft sees 2012 operating expenses of $28.6-$29.2 billion.

Shares of Microsoft are down fractionally after hours to $26.81.
