IHS iSuppli (NYSE: IHS) finally did a bill-of-materials (BOM) for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) new iPhone 4S.
Despite the shockingly specific prices, there is no specific manufacturers mentioned.
Costs drivers topping the list, as might be expected, include the mechanical/electro-mechianical at $33 per unit, wireless section, containing BB/RF/PA at $23.54 per unit, display at $23 per unit, NAND Flash memory, which varies with modeling, thus varying the price, but tops out at $76.80 per unit for 64-gigabytes.
Some upgrades that IHS mentions include the upgrade in capability "compared to previous members of the iPhone line, employing a dual-mode design that supports air standards for all wireless service partners supported by Apple worldwide," as well as "he ACPM-7181 converged power amplifier module (PAM) from the previously unheralded supplier Avago..a PAM is a device that amplifies a radio signal prior to transmission. What makes the converged Avago part unique is its capability to support both 2G and 3G cellular technologies across multiple bands thus reducing the number of components and PC board footprint required."
QUALCOMM's (Nasdaq: QCOM) MDM6610 baseband processor is also used in the iPhone 4S.
The total BOM? About $188 per base, or $196 + manufacturing costs. Apple's most expensive iPhone 4S goes for $254 with manufacturing included. The BOM doesn't include things like "software, licensing, royalties or other expenditures." With devices selling at $199 to $399, Apple is getting a little profit from each, but like Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), it's more likely aiming to sling more media like audio, video, and apps, which generally carry cushier margins.
Apple is down about 0.7 percent Thursday afternoon.
