Shares of LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) ended Monday down about 6 percent following reports the company is missing out on a large portion of its total audience: women.
According to the NY Post and Pew Research Monday, women generally dominate most social networking sites save for Linkedin. The reason? Many still like to network the old fashioned way with a face-to-face meeting.
LinkedIn's Connection Director commented on the phenomena, saying, "women tend to network in person more predominantly than online. Additionally, while men are more comfortable asking for introductions or reaching out to second- and third-level networks, women prefer to create deeper connections with or through people they know." She also believes women keep social media usage to personal use, but as the workplace gets more competitive, she believes it's a tool women should use more.
Data bit: According to a 2011 Pew Research Center study, 56 percent of social-network site users are female, but LinkedIn users include nearly twice as many men (63 percent) as women (37 percent).
Will LinkedIn be able to make the connection? Or will investors be left out in the cold?
