Apple (AAPL) Aims to Expand iCloud with New Media Type

Apple is looking to expand its streaming ability.

According to reports Thursday, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is in discussions with Hollywood movie studios to allow for streaming of iTunes movies users purchase to mobile devices like the iPad and iPhone without having to manually transfer them...in other words, access them from the cloud.

With the launch of Apple's iCloud service recently, the discussions make sense. Users can remotely store music, photos, and documents on iCloud, then remotely access them from anywhere.

And clouds are popping up everywhere. Earlier in the week, a consortium of movie studios unveiled UltraViolet, which is a remote storage and viewing service for movies. In addition, Disney (NYSE: DIS) has been said to be working on a cloud-based system it calls KeyChest.

Notably, the UltraViolet system has apps which allow for playback on iPad and iPhones. It's not clear whether this will be a determining factor in studios' decision to allow streaming from iCloud, but best guesses would have studios aiming to get their content on as many platforms as possible for the best price possible.

Apple shares are 0.2 percent lower Thursday.
