Microsoft (MSFT) May Have Changed EU Minds in Getting Skype Approval - FT

Shares of Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) finished-up Wednesday about 2.2 percent better amid rumors the company might have finally won over European competition authorities.

According to the Financial Times, Microsoft should get approval from Brussels in its planned $8.5 billion (€5.9 billion) acquisition of Skype.

Following complaints from potential rivals that Microsoft might be bundling Skype software with Windows, European Union competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia is expected to approve the measure without much trouble.

With the FTC saying there was sufficient competition, Microsoft won approval in the U.S. during June. Microsoft still faces hurdles in Russia, Ukraine, Serbia, and Taiwan before it can consummate the merger.

Microsoft noted Skype will be available on Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS and other operating systems and platforms moving forward.

Microsoft has been butting heads with the EU for some time as anti-competitive measures have been raised against the Windows-maker over the last 10 to 15 years or more.
