Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5 Not Expected Until Late-2012, Mid-2013

October 5, 2011 7:49 AM EDT
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may have shocked investors and consumers alike with it's iPhone announcements Tuesday.

Expecting a brand-new iPhone 5, media was met with a faster, more useful iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S. The upgrades include the dual-core A5 chip, an 8-megapixel camera, 1080p HD video recording, and voice assistant, 'Siri.'

IHS (NYSE: IHS) now believes the iPhone 5 will likely debut in late 2012 or mid-2013 at the latest. IHS says the device will most likely run on a 4G LTE network, and the delay is due to no affordable chipset being currently available to produce a thinner form design.

On the current A5, an IHS analyst said, "The use of the A5 should increase the performance significantly, and will put Apple right at the leading edge of the dual-core trend in smartphones."

AT&T (NYSE: T) has also said the iPhone 4S will run faster on its HSPA+ network when compared with rivals Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Sprint (NYSE: S). CNET reports the HSPA+ downloads "are twice as fast as the same device operating on 3G networks," but noted "the real-life benefits of AT&T's HSPA+ network may not be felt equally by all AT&T subscribers."

Apple is trading slightly lower Wednesday morning.
