Gainers
Receders
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.65 percent to $54.25. The CBOE VIX index is trading relatively flat Monday, as markets continue to focus on Europe and Greece amid stronger-than-expected ISM data showing expansion. The ISM Index came in at 51.6 in September, better than 50.5 expected, and up from 50.6 reported in August.
- iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV) up 3.39 percent to $29.89. Silver and gold are becoming attractive investments again, as the recent price dip has some believing the metals are a cheaper way to hedge against market volatility. Over the weekend, Greece said it would miss deficit targets for this year, rekindling fears of further credit crunch in Europe. Greek officials believe Greece's deficit will be closer to 8.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), above the 7.6 percent goal set by the IMF, EU, and ECB.
- iShares MSCI Taiwan Index (EWT) up 1.10 percent to $11.94. Hopes for increased spending during China's seven-day National Day holiday week are helping out Taiwanese stocks. With growth in China stronger for 2011, consumers may be able to spend more during the holiday on electronics and other goods.
Receders
- Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 1.03 percent to 57.91. Energy companies are getting hit Monday, as crude prices are falling below the $80 price level on fears of lessened demand on European concerns. November contracts are $0.78 lower to $78.42 per barrel on the Comex.
- Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) down 3.72 percent to $3.11. The solar sector ETF is hitting a 52-week low of $3.10 today, helped in part by First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) following announcement of U.S. DoE loan guarantees for, and sale of, its Desert Sunlight and Antelope Valley solar projects. Jefferies commented earlier that the guarantees came up short of what was initially promised. First Solar shares are 3.2 percent lower Monday.
- Market Vectors Coal ETF (NYSE: KOL) down 2.24 percent to $29.68. Coal might be getting a push lower from Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI), which issued lower fiscal 2011 guidance Monday morning. Arch Coal is trading 4.4 percent lower on the session.
