Google (GOOG) Purchases Over 1K Patents From IBM (IBM) to Defend Android

Bloomberg reports that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) has recently purchased 1,023 patents from International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) in hopes to protect its Android operating system. The company originally acquired the patents on August 17.
The 1023 patents from IBM will combine with the 17,000 from the Motorola Mobility Holdings (NYSE: MMI) acquisition to counter hostile lawsuits from companies such as Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT).
Last month Google transferred nine patents that it acquired from Motorola and Openwave Systems (Nasdaq: OPWV) to HTC in an effort to protect the Android user from lawsuits by Apple.
