Sprint (S) to Keep Unlimited Data Plans with Rumored iPhone 5 Launch

September 9, 2011 11:42 AM EDT
According to rumors Friday morning, Sprint (NYSE: S) is planning to retain its unlimited data plan should it start to carry the iPhone. This is in contradiction to what AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) have in place, charging lighter users for less data use and heavier users for more use.

In a way, it really does make sense for Sprint to keep an unlimited plan. 39 million postpaid wireless subs should average 2-gigabytes or less in any given month, with outliers expanding to 10 or more GB and some using less. Because the average users may not be aware of their use, the prospect of "unlimited" rings with a sexy tone. "No limits," a user might say. "I feel like the Steve Prefontaine of wireless data. A mobile eagle soaring high above a sea of apps and Internet, picking my prey at will! I might as well just download ALL FREAKING NIGHT!"

Enough talk about turning regular people into scary mobile freaks... let's see what Sprint's getting for unlimited data, and what competitors have for 2-GB per month plans.

In this author's area, full unlimited is about $100 per month, or $70 for 450 minutes of talk plus unlimited data. Verizon is about $40 for 450 minutes plus $30 for 2-GB of data. AT&T is $40 for 450 minutes with $20 to $25 for 2-GB per month.
