Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Bayer Receive Favorable FDA Panel Vote for Xarelto

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) and Bayer have gotten a positive vote for its proposed blood thinner.

In a 9-2 vote, a Food and Drug Administration panel voted in favor of recommending Xarelto, a once-a-day anti-clotting pill jointly developed by J&J and Bayer.

Reuters said Xarelto is one of several entrants aimed at replacing risky warfarin for prople with atrial fibrillation, or dangerously irregular heart rhythms. Competitors include Boehringer Ingelheim’s Pradaxa, as well as Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (NYSE: BMY) Eliquis (apixaban). Pradaxa is currently approved for use in heart patients, while Eliquis is currently in clinical trials.

Though the FDA doesn't have to go with the recommendation of a panel, investors are hoping for a positive outcome when the FDA makes its final decision in November.
