Sprint (S) Sets October Date for Possible iPhone 5 Intro (AAPL)

August 30, 2011 9:32 AM EDT
Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) may put an end to the rumors, scheduling a "Strategy Update" on October 7th.

The event is invite-only, sent out to only certain members of the press. Presentations will be made by Sprint senior management.

Some speculate the presentation will focus on Sprint's high-speed 4G network plans, but might also include the introduction of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone. Last week, word on the Street was Sprint would carry Apple's new iPhone, as well as the iPhone 4, starting this fall.

Let's be clear... Apple is going to debut the new iPhone. It's too big of a product to allow someone else to introduce it. Last January, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) unveiled a CDMA-compatible iPhone 4 for its network, but that was months after AT&T (NYSE: T) got the device.

AppleInsider reports a leaked memo instructed Sprint employees to not comment on whether an iPhone will appear on Sprint's network.

Sprint is down about 0.5 percent just minutes after the opening bell Tuesday.
