Notable ETF Movers of the Day 08/29: (MOO) (USO) (XLF) Higher; (GLD) (VXX) Lower

Gainers

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) up 2.01 percent to $51.37. Agri's are a little mixed today. Monsanto (NYSE: MON) is lower following reports that its genetically modified corn crops are losing resistance to bugs. Conversely, Mosaic is trading higher following a USO) up 2.20 percent to $33.88. Crude is comfortably higher Monday, as Hurricane Irene had less of an impact on the East Coast than originally anticipated, and many refineries stayed operational. October contracts are up $1.75 to $87.12 per barrel on the Comex.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 2.98 percent to $13.15. Financials are moving higher today, in the wake of Irene, as the hurricane did less damage than expected. Further, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) officially announced entering an agreement to sell of most of its China Construction Bank Corporation (CCB) stake. BofA shares are up 5 percent Monday.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 1.85 percent to $174.19. Gold is retreating today, as investors take profit and head for equities. However, with Europe returning from holiday, keeping an eye on debt issues that still linger may not be a bad idea. Gold prices tend to move a little bit more depending on what sovereign debt issues are happening across the pond.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 4.85 percent to $39.08. The CBOE VIX is 6 percent lower Monday, as tensions ease following speculation of potential damage Hurricane Irene might inflict on the East Coast, and it's subsequent fallout. The market is shaking off news personal income grew less than expected and personal spending increased more than anticipated. Spending rose 0.8 percent in July, versus expectations for a 0.5 percent increase. Personal income gained just 0.3 percent, from the 0.4 percent expected. Both numbers were an increase over June data.
