HP (HPQ) Keeps Top Spot in Servers, But Cedes Market Share

Server revenue in the second quarter increased 19.5 percent from the same period last year, while shipments improved 8 percent.
According to research from Gartner this morning, total second-quarter revenue increased from $11.084 billion to $13.241 billion. Retaining it's top position was Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) with sales of $3.947 billion, a 19.5 percent increase. Amid the boosted revs, Hewlett-Packard's market share dropped from 32.0 percent to 29.8 percent.
Making a notable gain was International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM), which saw revs grow 11.4 percent to $3.794 billion. IBM's market share grew 1.1 points from 27.6 percent to 28.7 percent.
Third was Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) at $1.883 billion, while Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) came in fourth with $936 million in sales.
From a geographic standpoint, the Asia/Pacific region grew the most in shipments with a 25.6 percent increase. Japan posted the highest vendor revenue growth at 59.5 percent for the period.
Looking at shipments, HP shipped more than rivals once again, seeing an 11.7 percent increase to 719,590 units. The number increased HP's market share 1 point to 30.8 percent.
Dell moved 511,507 units, down 5.8 percent year-over-year, causing it's market share to fall 3.2 points to 21.9 percent. IBM was third, showing modest growth to 273,718 units.
Japan-based Fujitsu saw a notable increase in shipments, by 17.8 percent to 71,848.
