Notable ETF Movers of the Day 07/19: (USO) (XLF) (XRT) Higher; (VXX) (GLD) (UUP) Lower

July 19, 2011 12:25 PM EDT
Gainers

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 1.97 percent to $38.33. Though off of highs for the day, the crude ETF is still up on the session as the U.S. dollar weakens on increased risk tolerance from investors. The EUR/USD is at €1.4193, up about 0.6 percent on the session. Weaker dollars make for cheaper crude, a buying opportunity for most.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 0.34 percent to $14.70. Several financials posting earnings beats today, including Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC), BofA (NYSE: BAC), and Bank of New York (NYSE: BK).

  • SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) up 1.38 percent to $54.48. The ICSC-Goldman Sachs (ICSC-GS) chain-store sales index rose by 0.4 percent last week. The ETF is being led higher by OfficeMax Inc. (NYSE: OMX), which is up nearly 4 percent on the session.

Receders

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 2.62 percent to $23.02. The CBOE VIX is about 5.7 percent lower today, as financial earnings, and better-than-expected housing data are contributing to gains.

  • SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) down 0.26 percent to $156.17. The ETF is lower today on potential profit taking from investors, as gold prices recently pierced the $1,600 per ounce mark. The precious metal is just about flat on the session today. Increasing concerns in Europe, and failure for the U.S. to reach a debt agreement may both contribute to potential upside for the metal.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.33 percent to $21.41. Again, the U.S. dollar is showing some weakness today as investors turn back to equities and the euro gains some steam.
