Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) recently announced, and gave special previews for, its brand new social hub, Google+.
Despite being a pain to type, Google+ allows users to create a network, or several "networks" rather, to interact with others. Google is banking on a solid user base for Gmail and Docs to drive growth.
Many have said that Google+ could be a potential Facebook killer. That's unlikely, given that Facebook recently surpassed the 750 million user mark (about 12 - 13 percent of the world's population).
One astute writer at Forbes pointed out that Google's new toy would be an excellent replacement for those seeking a new business tool. Specifically, it could affect LinkedIn (Nasdaq: LNKD) more than Facebook. Microsoft's Office 365 might also be in trouble as well (as if it isn't already, based on pricing).
Google+ has a feature called 'Circles,' which allows users to group friends based on interests. The feature would allow users to better connect corporate groups, which LinkedIn aims for, aside from folks networking for jobs on the site.
Further, Google+ is also looking to integrate Google+ into Microsoft's new arch nemesis, Google Apps. Apps is the very program the drove Microsoft to create Office 365.
Also, Google+'s 'Hangout' feature, allowing for video chatting with multiple people, will put a damper on Skype, which Microsoft just put in an $8.5 billion bid for.
Forbes concludes that, although Google+ might take on Facebook in the future, right now it just wants to see what users do with the product. And LinkedIn and Microsoft may one to keep an eye on it.
It appears Google+ has already become a resounding success and yesterday VP Vic Gundotra said they've shut down the invite mechanism for the night because of "insane demand."
Google is trading about 0.7 percent better early today, while Microsoft is up a more modest 0.4 percent and LinkedIn is up 0.7 percent.
