Pew Research Monday is saying tablet PCs are dead in the water.

According to the firm's research, U.S. adults who own an e-Reader recently doubled from 6 percent in November of 2010 to 12 percent last month. Pew notes this is the first time ownership for an e-Reader has reached double-digits since the firm first began tracking growth in April 2009.

E-Readers include offerings from Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS), and others.

Conversely, tablet PCs, which gained acceptance last year amid the introduction of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad, have seen a slowdown in sales over the same time period, increasing from 5 to 8 percent.

Pew further comments: "There is notable overlap in e-reader and tablet computer ownership – 3% of US adults own both devices. Nine percent own an e-book reader but not a tablet, while 5% own a tablet computer but not an e-reader."
