Intel Tablets to Debut in 2012; Will Untilize Windows 8 OS - Digitimes (INTC) (MSFT)

Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) may not be giving up it's 'Wintel' set of offerings quite yet.

According to Digitimes, in order to remain relevant, Microsoft and Intel will collaborate in an effort to release a new Windows-based platform for tablet PCs. The move is also an effort to compete more effectively with Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and its iPad.

The new tablets are slated to roll out sometime in 2012, and will offer something different than the current ARM (Nasdaq: ARMH) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based offerings.

Many vendors have been upset with the lackluster performance of tablet PCs built with the ARM/Android package.

The duo recently revealed a road map for Wintel production and platform goals to partners, according to sources with knowledge on the matter. Wintel tablet PCs will come with Windows 8 OS and an Intel chip that uses less than 5W of power.

Vendors are also hoping the Wintel tablets will help resolve issues found between Android 3.0 and 3.1, Digitimes said.
