Worldwide DRAM Sales Slump in Q1 on Weaker ASPs - IHS

While first-quarter revenue is generally the lightest sales time of the year for dynamic random access memory makers, IHS (NYSE: IHS) reported Tuesday this last quarter was particularly unimpressive.

DRAM sales in the first-quarter fell 12.6 percent from $9.5 billion to $8.3 billion, shy of the $9 billion in revenue sought by analysts. Although the decline looks sharp, it should be noted last year's comparable number for the quarter was up more than 180 percent.

IHS notes the decline in revs came from weak average selling prices: down 42 percent from $2.78 to $1.61 per unit. Analysts were looking for an ASP closer to $1.89 per unit.

Principal DRAM and memory analyst for IHS, Mike Howard, said, "For the Top 8 DRAM companies—together responsible for 98.1 percent of the total industry—revenue in the first quarter this year fell for every single player, although the rankings held steady."

Leading the pack was Samsung (OTCBB: SSNLF) with a 39.3 percent market share and revenue of $3.26 billion. The number is a drop from its 41.3 percent share and $3.63 billion for the fourth quarter of last year.

Micron Technology (NYSE: MU) ended up fourth overall, selling $1.08 billion of chips for a 13 percent market share.
