Needham & Company reiterates a 'Buy' on Optimer Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: OPTR), PT $19.

Needham analyst says, "Optimer announced late Friday that Dificid was approved by the FDA for the treatment of C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). The label incorporates an important benefit of the drug over vancomycin, namely lower recurrence of infection. In a conference call this morning, management announced the drug will be priced at a premium, $2800 per course ($140 * 2 tablets for 10 days)."

"We do not anticipate rapid market penetration, but believe there may be room for a positive surprise with the involvement of Cubist’s sales force in launching the drug. We expect Dificid to gain most traction once incorporated in treatment guidelines, which may occur in 2012/2013."
